The Library: The Hunt for a Librarian Begins

Ryan (Auditor 07-08).
Ryan (Auditor 07-08)

As some of you will know efforts have been made to (finally) establish the PaganSoc’s library. The first step has been made; we have managed to get space for a locker between Th.A and Th.B on the first floor.

The next steps will be to find a Librarian and get books. To that end PaganSoc invites you all to email us (ucdpagansoc@gmail.com) and offer suggestions as to what book we should be buying.

Also in regards to the now open position of Librarian Article 14 of the constitution covers the duties of the position;

14. There shall be a Librarian of the Society. They shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Society held in the Trinity Term. Their term of office shall be from the end of the Trinity Term in which they are elected until the same time the following year. The duties of the Librarian shall include (I’ve added comments to help describe things):

a) maintaining the Society Library
[Goes without saying]

b) ensuring that the Society Library has a varied collection of material, dealing with all denominations of Paganism within the Society in so far as the Society funds will allow
[Again straight forward enough, this would mean that you would have to work with the Treasurer/Auditor in order to get money for books]

c) ensuring that members have sufficient access to the Society Library so that they may borrow material from the Society Library
[In other words, you’re Librarian 9 to 6, Monday to Friday. You’d never be expected to miss college work though, but you must be on-call whenever possible.]

d) managing the security deposit on materials within the Society Library
[Here’s where we need someone reliable and trustworthy. You would have a second cash-box just of the security deposits, this means handling money, this is the one place where the Treasurer/Auditor would really be keeping an eye on you, but if you’re honest you don’t have to worry. Also be aware that it’s up to you to get books back from those who borrowed them]

e) giving a report on the condition of the Society Library at the Annual General Meeting
[This would just be a basic report, books gained, books lost and problems, stuff like that]

f) liaising with the webmaster in the running of the Society Library
[I will be setting up an online monitoring system for the books. This would have a list of the books we have, would take in ISBN number of new books and be added to the list, books lost would have to be removed and, hopefully, the system could keep track of books on-loan. You would have to keep this up-to-date]

g) overseeing production of any society publications in the role of editor.
[Paths, if you haven’t read any of them yet you can find them at http://pagansoc.com/society-information/paths/ You would be editor; in charge of getting articles (harder than it sounds) and publishing the finished product]

For those interested in the position email us at the usual address ucdpagan@gmail.com. Also don’t forget to check out our Resources page at http://pagansoc.com/resources/ where you’ll find a list of pagan-interest book available in the UCD Library and websites of interest.
